Dimilin® belongs to a modern class of insecticides, the benzoyl ureas, commonly referred to as Insect Growth Regulator (IGR’s). They have a mode of action very different to conventional neurotoxic insecticides.

Insect larvae that are controlled by the active ingredient Diflubenzuron come predominantly from the families Diptera (flies/mosquitoes) and Lepidoptera (butterflies/moth). Unlike most conventional larvicides that attack the nervous system of a broad spectrum of insects, the active ingredient in Dimilin® works on a narrow spectrum of insects to disrupt the normal molting process. Diflubenzuron enters the insect larvae through contact or ingestion and interferes with its ability to form chitin, the material that makes up the exoskeleton. Treated larvae are either unable to escape the old larval skin, or the new, weak cuticle of the new instar is lethally injured and larvae dies before reaching the next growth stage.

Dimilin® is available in three formulation types, namely Dimilin® SC48, Dimilin® WP-25 and Dimilin® GR-2. All Dimilin® products have been formulated differently to better perform specific larviciding functions.

Dimilin® SC48 is a suspension concentrate formulation containing 480g active ingredients per kilogram. Suspension concentrates are liquid based formulations, which facilitates easy dosing and mixing when preparing the solution.

Dimilin® WP25 is a wettable powder formulation containing 250g active ingredient per kg and is the most commonly used formulation to treat both fly and mosquito breeding sites.

Dimilin® GR-2 is an easy to apply granular formulation with effervesence characteristics allowing the active ingredient to spread quickly and evenly in the treated water. Dimilin® GR-2 can be applied directly to the site via suitable granule spreading equipment, by hand or after dilution with water. Dimilin® GR-2 is recommended only for use in wet fly-breeding sites due to the conditions necessary for the effervesence to perform correctly.

The toxicity of diflubenzuron to mammals is very low and at the recommended application rates is non-toxic to fish, wildlife, domestic animals and is easily degraded in soil and water.

Areas of use:

Dimilin® SC48, Dimilin® WP25 and Dimilin® GR-2 can be be applied directly to fly and mosquito breeding sites.
